Grades and paper

What H, B and GSM actually change

Pencil choice is about the mark and the paper under it, not about price. Four points cover most of it.

  1. H is hard and light; B is soft and dark. HB sits in the middle. A 6B smudges easily; a 4H barely marks smooth paper.
  2. Paper texture decides how a pencil behaves. Toothy paper grips graphite and takes more layers; smooth paper suits fine line work.
  3. Coloured pencils are wax or oil based. Wax blends easily and can bloom; oil holds a sharper point. The listing states which.
  4. Kits are counted by pieces, not by colours. A 48-piece kit may include blenders and sharpeners. The page lists what is in the tin.
