Graphite, coloured and mechanical pencils, sold singly and in graded sets. Two things decide what a pencil does: the grade of the core and how hard you press. Hard grades (H) hold a fine line for construction work; soft grades (B) lay down the dark tones a drawing needs. Soft cores break easily if a pencil is dropped, and a fractured core keeps breaking at every sharpening afterwards.
